ABC News: Dean to get major Union endorsement
ABC News: The NOTE reports that the 140,000 member International Union of Painting and Allied Trades (UPAT) is planning on endorsing Gov. Howard Dean next week in Iowa. It is a unanimous decision. The union represents painters, dry-wallers, glass workers, and wall-paper hangers.

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/politics/TheNote/TheNote.html
report is under title: House of Labor.

This is Dean's first major Union endorsement, but there is a good chance he will get an even bigger one next month when Service employees (SEIU) make their endorsement.

1. yay!
Go Dean, Go Dean, it's your birthday, it's your birthday....

Seriously, a unanimous endorsement? Wow.
If Dean can pick up the SEIU and maybe the UAW,
that's a nice wedge v. Gephardt.

3. It's a good choice for this particular union
given the hazards of their work, a doctor is a good man to represent them.

5. Still wondering about that one....
He said it was generally good for all Dems so this probably isn't it. But that begs the question: What the hell is it?

18. Dean has no tolerance for those not born rich
working people and their dirty fingernails disgust him.

<sarcasm off>

21. lovely idea, but can't happen
Gephardt's got enough unions to block anyone else,
but not enough to win it.

If Dean picks up the SEIU, then Gep's really sunk.

9. Awesome

A positive post about Dean and NO ONE from a rival camp has come in here to piss on the parade. It's nothing like the pro-Kerry threads.

10. this sounds like a good reason to me
The union's leadership likes Dean because his campaign has been able to galvanize disenfranchised Democrats and use the Internet to reach new voters.

"Our endorsement is largely in recognition that Governor Dean has done what we've all asked Democratic candidates to do, and that is to find the base of the party and mobilize it -- and don't rely on labor to be the sole ground troops."

11. Could I be the first non-Dean supporter
to offer congratulations. This really is big, primarily because it challenges the notion that Gephart has 100% of the union vote sewn up and also because it continues to help define and narrow the Democratic race. You guys have a quality candidate, and if my first choice doesn't win, I hope yours does.

Congrats :toast:

13. I like pretty much all our guys...
Of course I have problems with Lieberman, and I dislike Sharpton, but I can pretty much get on board with any of them and would happily support the main 4 or 5 candidates. Clark and Dean are just my favorites because they're both liberals and both outsiders and I think, as such, they have a greater appeal for independents.

19. If a Democratic New York Jew and
a Democratic Mississippi Episcopalian

agree that Sharpton and Lieberman should not represent our party, we're approaching consensus.

Lieberman & Sharpton are helping to bridge the religous & geographical divides.
