1. They were probably real

You could take photographs at a predominately heterosexual public event and take the same kind of photos. It is a red herring. I mean when I was at Mardi Gras there were many straight men exposing themselves to the girls showing breast. But you would never see Oreally cover it as if they were bad for the heterosexual image.

I have been involved in organizing of gay parades (I preferred when they were "marches") and you would be surprised how many gay men and lesbians attended the pre-meetings attempting to ban the outrageous or politically embarrassing groups from having a contingent in the parade, ie: S/M, Leather Community, etc.

4. I know I'm about to be flamed....
But, Disney World really isn't the same as Mardi Gras. But, then again, I wouldn't take my kids to Mardi Gras either...

I don't even care as much about the men in drag leading the parade. I just don't know if the public sex acts can or should be defended by anyone.

Like I said, I'm basing this on O'reilly's accounts. If this stuff didn't happen, then I'm out of line. If it did, then I think both the gay community and Disney ought to stand up and agree that it was inappropriate....

... I'm starting to feel the flames already....

5. You seem to want to be flamed

Who is defending public sex acts? I'm sure most people would agree. I knew by the fact that you have a small amount of posts and you start a thread with a controversial topic, that you either want a flame war or just want to paint gay people with a broad brush out of your ignorance.

You asked if the photos where real. If your concern was other than that--you should have clarified in your first post--but I see your agenda clearly. I've wasted enough time.

That is why I told you the story of how many gay men and women are against the more outlandish displays of other gays. Do all "straight" people speak as one community? Of course not. It is bigotry to expect that all gay people do so.

6. How ironic....
"I knew by the fact that you have a small amount of posts and you start a thread with a controversial topic, that you either want a flame war or just want to paint gay people with a broad brush out of your ignorance."

Now who's painting who with a broad brush?

My initial post was a question - I wanted to know if the clips were legitimate or not. If they are not, then I have no problems (neither with Gay Day, nor anything else).

As for my comments about getting flamed - I based those on the fact that none of the initial responses seemed to think that there was any problem with the clips. I did. Thus, I believed that my opinion would be unpopular. In my mind, I thought that mentioning the fact that I was expecting to get flamed would in some way curtail at least the name calling aspect of them (i.e. bigot). I was wrong.

Further, I did not realize that I had to have a certain number of posts before I was "allowed" by other DU members to ask a controversial question. If that is an unwritten rule, then I am guilty of breaking it and I apologize.

Either way, my point is still the same. If the clips shown on O'reilly's show are, in fact, accurate (some displaying public sex acts), then I think everyone should be concerned. I would think that the gay community and Disney especially would want to get out and let it be known that these acts were isolated and will not be tolerated in the future.

10. Madri Gras is not a Child friendly event
I think Disney has a slightly different target market then Bourbon Street (although I enjoy both!)

2. Bring on the Drag Queens and Leather Daddies!
Edited on Fri Aug-08-03 01:18 PM by LeftCoast
When I was first coming out the "freakies" used to bother me. Now, more than anything else, the fact that these folks irk the shit out of the right wing means that I support them 110%! Look, just yesterday somebody shot the window out of the back of our jeep because we fly a gay pride flag in front of our house. Being meek and quiet little fags will NOT protect you. If it's your thing then live large! Dress up, go crazy, but do not let society turn us all into little soul-less GAP clones.

My 2 cents.

3. Me too, I love and am fond of the "weirdos"
After all they deserve much credit for helping the cause of gay rights in the USA. They fought when the "straight-acting" were still taking their cousins to the prom.

7. Could you please post a link
I'd be interested in knowing exactly what was shown on the Factor.

Having been to the Days often--it's a pretty timid affair--no more shocking than any other day--beyond the Sea of Red shirts.

This kind of thread can get ugly quick though with unfounded rumors etc.

8. I could've sworn...
that one of the guests said some of those pictures had been taken at clubs away from the park. Whereupon OhReally grunted an assent and went on back to trying to create an image that there was a river of sperm encircling the park.

9. I think you must be right
I've gone through the internet and can't find anything about any of this happening in the park - just in hotels around it...
