Choose your favorite entertainer that the right hates.
As most of you probably know there are many sites run by right wing nuts that boycott entertainers that they believe are "unpatriotic" (there term for those on the left). Well one that I particularly find is good for a laugh is Pabaah or Patriotic Americans Boycotting Anti-American Hollywood. They happen to have a rather bulky boycott list that I have provided so you can choose your favorite star and support them by seeing their movies, buying their music, etc. Sorry for the size of the list but Pabaah is just full of hot air. I've put stars next to my choices, please reply and tell me who are your choices and why.

28. The average Hollywood star is lucky to have a high school diploma
What does that tell you about Hollywood entertainers?

I have no problem with these stars voicing their opinions, its just the fact that we are EXPOSED to their opinions by the media like they are actually worth considering that bothers me.

53. The "average" Hollywood star is no more or less ignorant
or informed than the average American, or average "TV journalist" for that matter. Who's more intelligent, or worthy of being heard, Meryl Streep or Peggy Noonan? I think anyone's opinion is worth considering if they can make a cogent argument, which a lot of these folks are doing. If I had access to a soapbox, you can bet your ass I'd use it.

And Britney Spears made that heartwarming speech about supporting the president that ended up in F9/11. Does anyone remember that creepy Pepsi commercial where Bob Dole was leering at then teenaged Britney while she writhed around? Can you say pedophile? YUCK.

There's also all those country music artists that think Bush is awesome, do they count as "Hollywood"?

Twenty years ago the right loved Willie Nelson and hated Alice
Cooper.

Willie Nelson, hangs with Hell's Angels - Good.

Alice Cooper, Satanist - Bad.

Turns out twenty years ago Willie was smokin' twisty cigs with
the Angels and Alice was playin' golf with Bob Hope and
vacationing with the Republicant's in Palm Springs.

Now Willie Nelson, Hells Angles & Pot - Bad.

Alice Cooper, shut up and sing - Good.

15. I'm picking Elton, but only because he smacked down Dennis Miller
Did everyone hear that story? At some kind of star-studded benefit in Vegas, Elton came on after Dennis did his inhumane, jackass routine, and Elton just shook his head and said,

"If you want to know why the rest of the world hates America, it's Dennis Miller. If you people think that's funny, you've gone mental."

I loved him as an adolescent, but this made me fall in love with him all over again.

Too bad every American didn't hear it. It went to the heart of why I am absolutely terrified of this man. American's can't walk the streets anywhere anymore (I travel abroad a great deal). The world, based on what I'm reading now around the globe, is in an utter state of shock that Bush is ahead in the polls. Up to now it has been anti-Bushism. If we actually ELECT this shit that will change. The only thing giving 90% of the world any tolerance for the American people now is the belief that we didn't actually elect the man.

29. why are their motives illogical
They disagree with what those entertainers have to say, and they feel it is important enough to show by boycotting.

I dont understand what is going on --- those who have protested the war have it within their rights to protest the war, actively voicing their opinions and boycotting certain politicians when they are voting. Those who support the war and oppose the actions undertaken by these famous (often stupid), but famous, Hollywood figures... why should we call what they are doing illogical --- if they support the war, then this would be the logical thing to do, wouldn't it?

I just really do not understand Hollywood. These people are completely full of themselves, and totally out of tune with the REAL world. Yet they are the ones we see, and theirs are the opinions we hear. They certainly should not be glorified in their actions. Why most of them turn out to be liberal is anyones best guess.

Johnny Depp went over to Iraq to be a human shield... Is he dead yet? No, I'm sure he quickly got out when he learned no one really cares about him and they were going to drop bombs anyways. Whatever happened to his resolve?

35. True...
I guess I didn't think of that.

So boycotting select Hollywood actors is a logical step, however there are other means in which one could counter attacks by Hollywood's left.

They could support the war and the politicians by:

-Fighting in the war
-Starting a website that supports the war
-Writing a book
-holding a rally
-giving donations to the soldiers family's (something we all should do, there are always casualties on both sides.)
-Voting for Bush
-egging their house's

They don't need to attack the livelihood of Hollywood's left. Okay, I know that it probably won't really hurt their budgets, but would it be fair to hit any individual in the wallet simply because they don't share your political view? Is that really responsible?

To be totally honest though I agree with you about how Hollywood can breed idiots, and the problem remains that many people listen to these idiots. I guess that is something that Hollywood and politics share in common. Of course not all actors and politicians are stupid, and not all of them are out of touch and full of themselves.

"These people are completely full of themselves, and totally out of tune with the REAL world. Yet they are the ones we see, and theirs are the opinions we hear. They certainly should not be glorified in their actions."

Couldn't you replace "these people" with "the media" and still have a truthful, coherent sentence? The left is being slammed by the media and if those in Hollywood want to use their voices and their power to make a statement against the war in Iraq or in injustices at Guantanamo or any other thing that helps combat the outrageous statements made by Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, etc., then I say: AMEN TO THAT!

81. I beg to differ, but Hollywood is the real world.
In a manner of speaking. Actors aren't any kind of 'elite' as the right would have us believe, except those stars with the multi-million dollar salaries. The right can't comprehend anyone with that income not being conservative, and so they bash them.

To be a decent actor you have to wear another person's skin, for days, weeks, even months. That's one of the prime requisites for being a liberal, to understand when someone else is coming from. (This may explain why most conservative actors are like Ah-nold, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, playing the same type of character time after time and not reaching into the souls of their characters).

But most actors are like us. They come from lower middle-class homes, predominately from the heartland, live quiet lives. Next time you see a movie, sit through the whole credits. Those names are also Hollywood, not just the half dozen names on the marquee.

People in the entertainment industry give a lot of money to liberal causes, so I don't think we should be bashing them. We don't have people like Scaife and the Koch brothers bankrolling all of our groups.

I hate Harrison Ford. I own most all of his movies, but someone that goes over and presents an oscar to Roman "I like to drug and anally rape little girls" Polanski is just a bad man. I disagree with the death penalty comepletely except in cases of rape. Polanski should be executed and not rewarded.

One other thing, I jsut read an interesting book, written by a conservative and a liberal. Hollywood, Interupted: Insanity Chic in Babylon by Andrew Breitbart and Mark Ebner

but, I would think that having your eight month pregnant wife viciously murdered by a crazed lunatic would drive one to the brink of insanity. I think the man needs serious help.

As for disagreeing with the death penalty except in cases of rape, you aren't really suggesting life for Manson and death for Polanski, are you?

Harrison Ford (my all time-fave! He pretty much keeps his mouth shut about most things, so I really don't have a clue what he believes)

Al Franken (I mentioned him recently and my reich-wing fundy family frowned, proving to me that Limbaugh got to them before Al did.)

David Duchovny (I miss the X-Files...back before it got stupid)

Jackson Browne ("Lawyers in Love," man)

Cary Elwes (R.O.U.S's? I don't think they exist.)

Viggo Mortensen!!!!! THE KING!!!!!

Sir Ian McKellan ('nuff said)

Andy Serkis ("What has it gots in its nasty little pocketses?")

I'm suprised he'd be on this list. Okie from Muskogee was considered an about face from the flower power, Berkeley crowd of the 60's. I remember that well when it first came out. I don't like many on this list either, although as a libertarian I support their right to speak their mind. George Carlin is a favorite of mine, and I'd say he is more of a libertarian than a liberal. These people are entertainers, people should not care one way or another what they say anyway. I don't, they are no better than I am, they pull no more weight.

Looking at this list, I wonder if PABAAH members ever watch movies or go to concerts or read books. Any thoughts?

I have a hard time deciding on one, so I'll just list my top 5

1. Viggo Mortensen
2. Andy Serkis
3. SIR Ian McKellen (I had no idea he was gay until I listened to the TFoR commentary a week ago, he's certainly not what the right paints as the stereotypical gay person)
4. Jello Biafra
5. Al Franken

If you can tell, Lord of the Rings is my favorite movie (series). On that note, I'm not seeing Elijah Wood on here either, and he was pretty vocal against the war. Just my thoughts.

He probably pisses a lot of people on the right off. His music can get you thinking if you let it. "If I Had A Rocket Launcher", "Nicaragua", "And They Call It Democracy", "The Trouble With Normal", great stuff. His music helped open my mind up a couple years back in my more right-wing daze (sic).

102. Guess You Forgot About
His oposition to the Vietnam war, his work on behalf of native Americans and prisoners. And his lyrics to the song Man in Black (partial):

"Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believin' that we all were on their side."

Probably also forgot about his one fingered salute to the Nashville Music establishment in Billboard. He was one of Nashville's Outlaws. And at one time was actually banned from the Grand Ole Opry.

A patriot? Yes. A born-again pagan? Yes - definitely a man who struggled to overcome his demons. And a POPULIST. A man who spoke for the common man and his causes.

Only my third post and already I'm being outed.

Do I have to include the /sarcasm tag. This isn't FReepville.

My point is, when the right goes after an Ole Country legend like Johnny Cash, they've gone off the deep end.

The Leftist Celebrity hit list is a hate list. It's HUAC and McCarthyism all over again. Nothing and nobody is excempt.

For instance, I'm a Canadian so according to rightwingers I'm:

1) An Islamo-fascist surrender monkey
2) A slave citizen of the Soviet Republic of Canuckistan
3) A terrorist enabler
4) A victem of Anti-American wealth envy
5) A lazy parasitic socialist, pining for the failed Granny State

I could go on. Add more if you like. Hey, we could turn it into a board game like Clue or maybe Scrabble.

106. I don't believe
that anything I said was trivia to anyone who is familiar with the man and his career.

You might be interested in learning more about him. Really. Member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Youngest inductee ever into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Honoree. He was a contemporary of Elvis at Sun Records during the birth of rock and roll. He was one of the first to pioneer concept albums. He was a bad boy who dressed in black in the late 50's and early 60's long before it was popular for performers to do so. In the early 70's he outsold the Beatles - before they disbanded and went their separate ways. He hosted a network television show that introduced the country to other musicians including a young Bob Dylan whom he had befriended. He sang a variety of music - traditional folk, country, gospel, rockabilly - and covers of songs from alternatve groups including Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails. All pretty well known and established.

You're right he was hated by the right wing extremists. He kept, framed, and displayed a threatening letter he received from the KKK in the early 60's. And shortly after his death it was reported that the FBI had released well over 100 pages detailing various threats that had been made against him.

I admit to being more fascinated by the man and his artistry than by his music. I don't think there is much about him that can be neatly categorized. Personally, I consider him more of a populist with liberal leanings than a pure liberal.

By the way, welcome to DU. Canada is a beautiful country.

My Chance card says: "Go directly to jail. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200." What does that mean?

I'm old enough to remember the Cash show and the Grand Ole Opry even though I'm not a country or gospel fan. You are definitely more knowledgeable about him than I am. (KKK death threat? Yikes).

I also remember back then that America was polarized politically like it is now but honest compassion for the underdog was still respected on the left and right. Those day's are clearly gone.

Which is why I'm here. I get to talk to Americans who haven't gone over to the dark side.

Well, first of all Micheal Moore probably more than anyone. No self-respecting conservative in their right mind would even remotely just "not particularly care for" Mike. Other most hated Liberal Celebrity is probably Jane Fonda. I mean, after all, people have bumper stickers that say "I'm not FONDA Kerry". (sarcastic overtly-retarded voice): "HAHAHAHAHA THAT'S SO CLEVER!!!"

112. Suddenly I love Timothy Hutton - salon.com article
"At this stage of the campaign, the idea is to turn out Democratic voters, but while most of the actors went to homes with Kerry signs on their lawns, Timothy Hutton rang the bell of a house with four Bush signs. The man inside had printed up 50 photocopies of Osama bin Laden's recent remarks, which he planned to hand out that day, apparently because he felt they demonstrated that the arch-terrorist wants a Kerry victory. Hutton talked to him for a while, and by the end of their conversation, the man said he hadn't completely made up his mind who to vote for.

Perhaps he was simply cowed by being confronted with a movie star first thing in the morning. Still, Hutton said, "Why preach to the converted?" "
