Regarding the "rebates"
Can we refuse the check from the Treasury when it arrives?

Since these checks are an advance on next year's returns and it's possible I will owe money to Uncle Sam, why would I want to owe more next April?

It doesn't make much sense to me. Any thoughts?

1. Anyone is allowed to send money to the treasury at any time

If you pay $X in taxes and think you should pay more, you are able to do so. Or if you want to send back your tax rebate, you can do so. I think you should be able to find the details via google, or directly on the treasury's website.

2. I was wondering the same thing
but I figure they will simply say we got the checks and charge us for them anyway. Just means for me I must save up more money to pay taxes. I try and make it so every year I have to pay rather than get a refund--that way the government can't spend MY money on war and other immoral stuff.

3. Good plan - I try to come out even or close to it every year as well.
I'll probably end up sending the money back or saving it and earning a few bucks on it.

4. Do you really understand what the check is?
It is more than just a check. It is a reduction of the lowest tax brackets for 2008 and an expansion of the child tax credit. Thus, the bill is really a tax cut for 2008, with the amount of that cut being given to you today. Thus, it will not change what your tax situation would have been had it not passed.

That said, you can cash the check and turn right around and make an ES payment.

5. Put it in an intrest bearing account.
At least you'll make a few cents off of it before Unc'a Sam takes it back.

6. That's what I am going to do. I'm also going to encourage other
to do the same.
