A Request To Honor Ronald Reagan
We name buildings and bridges after politicians. Here's a new naming opportunity: economic catastrophe. I propose that we name the looming recession/depression after Ronald Wilson Reagan, the man who firmly yanked the nation's tiller to point us into this perfect storm.

Through his pet policies of borrow-and-spend and deregulation, and a general love for sodomizing the Middle Class, Reagan is the man who deserves the credit for our predicament. Sure, presidents since Reagan have embraced these policies to a greater or lesser degree, but Reagan was first, and he was best.

So let's do the right thing and give credit where credit is due. Let's raise a toast to the Ronald Reagan Recession!

:toast:

1. Brilliant!!
He's certainly earned it.

IMO, the impending stock market collapse should be named for Greenspan. Then we'd have the Greenspan Plunge that marked the beginning of the Reagan Depression. Seems fitting to me.

A Ronald Reagan Recession. "Financial analysts now fear an R3 downturn."

5. I've called bounced checks "Reagans"
since the early 80s. People who were living on debt never got it.

7. Ronald Reagan Recession is so appropriate. Good idea!
Trickle-down economics: when corporations do well, their employees do well & will spend more? More like: give all the corporations the power to squeeze the little guys until they have nothing left to spend, & for an added bonus, send their good jobs overseas so that they won't be able to earn enough to keep up with the rising cost of living.

8. I think we could maybe kick it up a notch
How about the GHW Bush 600 ship navy?

The Stockman Stock Exchange?

The Laffer Jones Industrial Average?

The James Watt climate crisis?

The Neal Bush Bank Meltdown (sometimes just called "The Rupture" by the theocons)?

9. Let's add W & Daddy too - The Reagan, Bush I & II Recession!
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 12:37 PM by 1776Forever
Maybe just add them as a dishonorable mention if that is too long! We might want to add on Greenspan as a contributor!

11. I second the motion
If we have a quorum, perhaps we could vote on this right now to make it an official DU moniker.

The Reagan Recession - all in favor say "aye".

{Aye}

12. AYE
And let me add a raised middle finger to all neocons, and in particular the One and Only Grover Norquist who put the Raygun policy into words: "We intend to shrink government to the point where we can drown it in a bathtub."

Now that's a real american patriot!

I volunteer to be the one to pull the lever on the gallows when we finally bring these traitors to justice.

18. There has already been a Reagan Recession
1981-83 was the worst part of it, but for some of us it lasted all through his 8 years.

15. But he couldn't have done it without the Bush Administration...
Can we at least hypenate it? Because if we don't, give the country a year or two and everyone will forget everything the bushies have done to screw us economically.

Can we modify it to the Reagan-Bush Recession?
