North American Union summit (without public consultation)

Prime Minister Stephen Harper, U.S. President George W. Bush
and Mexican President Felipe Calderon plant a ceremonial
oak tree following the leaders' trilateral summit in
New Orleans April 22, 2008.

Powerful council helping free-trade supporters win Round 3 of talks

Prime Minister Stephen Harper might have reminded the U.S. yesterday how much it depends on Canadian energy imports – and thus, on NAFTA – but he neglected to mention the onerous terms for Canada. Or that an even greater grab for northern energy continues apace, without public consultation.

Rather, elaborate machinery set up to facilitate greater "harmonization" with U.S. policy hums along, its creators coming from the most powerful conglomerates in the United States and its successes independent of such trilateral leaders' meetings as this week's confab in New Orleans among Harper, U.S. President George W. Bush and Mexico's Felipe Calderon.

There's already an energy downside for Canada. Under the terms of the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement, Canada can't ease up on energy exports to the U.S., even temporarily and including in times of shortage. NAFTA partner Mexico said no-go.

1. And let us not forget...
Edited on Wed Apr-23-08 05:02 PM by joey_aristophanes
... that it was only a few years ago that the US was claiming that, under the terms of NAFTA, all of Canada's water was the US's to grab any time it wanted, under the guise of a "continent-wide resource".

If -- and it's a BIG if -- we ever go ahead with the NAU, I can assure you that the only way Canada would succumb to such a bullshit marriage is by force and nothing less. And even then, with all of the US's troops off in the Middle East, Canada would win this particular war as splendidly as it did in 1812.

2. Welcome to DU
I'd like to point out that most of us here in the American Empire do not support the NAU plan, but most of us have not been consulted regarding our views of either domestic or foreign policies as of yet, and I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

As to the Armed Forces being occupied elsewhere...I wouldn't count on that. Our Dictators prefer mercenaries to regular troops, and there is no official count(That I would trust) as to how many of those available right now.

Ever see pictures of Blackwater in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina? That could be happening in your city in the near future.
