US appeals WTO condemnation
Geneva - The US on Monday formally appealed against a WTO ruling that US tariffs on some steel imports flout international trade rules in a dispute with the EU, Japan and six other countries, a WTO spokesperson said.

"The US has filed its appeal today," the spokesperson said.

The World Trade Organisation issued the decision by three independent experts on July 11 following the joint complaint about the US safeguard measures introduced by Washington in March 2002.

The panel rejected US arguments that the tariffs of between 8% and 30% on selected types of steel imports were needed because of increased steel imports that were hurting its domestic steel producers.

1. I'm surprised
That this arrogant administration actually cares what the WTO thinks.

3. Not really
I don't think they really care. The admin thinks the WTO has a lot of nerve making any move against the US and their decision shoul dbe reversed. After all, we are the omnipotent superpower.

Steel tariffs were put in place as a * campaign promise to protect the steel industry. So the intended benefit is to our workers which makes it tough to be against the tariff.

But tariffs make us open to retaliation. The global economy is complicated.
