"Death Knell" for internal combustion engine?
Wednesday, September 5, 2007
Texas startup says it has batteries beat
AUSTIN, Texas - Millions of inventions pass quietly through the U.S. patent office each year. Patent No. 7,033,406 did, too, until energy insiders spotted six words in the filing that sounded like a death knell for the internal combustion engine.

An Austin-based startup called EEStor promised "technologies for replacement of electrochemical batteries," meaning a motorist could plug in a car for five minutes and drive 500 miles roundtrip between Dallas and Houston without gasoline.

The vehicles would use "Ultra-Capacitors" instead of batteries. It's a revolutionary concept, but one that others have worked on (without success) for years. If you read the article, you will see that there are sceptics. But if they have perfected this technology, it would have many more applications than just powering vehicles...

For some of the new efficient options see the 100 Top Alternative Energy Breakthrough thread.

Check out the Lotus Upscale Electric Car, fastest car around yet extremely energy efficient.

2. Oooooh, NEAT, if it pans out
I'm seeing more and more alternatives out there. Some of them have got to pan out, just from the law of averages and the sheer number of possible innovations.

It's just not going to be neat, one centrally controlled fuel fits all. It's going to be a patchwork of different technologies for different needs.

All we need to do is get the oilmen out of power and get some real research grants out there.
