Conoco to build cost of carbon into plans

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil major ConocoPhillips Inc is
overhauling its long-term plans to build in assumptions
about the cost of cutting greenhouse gas emissions,
its chief executive said Thursday.

The move mirrors similar policies already in place at its
European competitors BP Plc and Royal Dutch Shell Plc,
who were much faster than Conoco or other U.S. oil
companies to publicly accept the link between carbon
dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and global warming.

The new planning process is designed to evaluate the
impact on Conoco's businesses under various carbon
dioxide emission reduction cost scenarios, including the
$20 to $40 per ton range suggested by some climate
change experts.
