GM to unveil petroleum-free Cadillac in Las Vegas

The Detroit News

General Motors Corp. said today it will unveil a petroleum-free Cadillac on Tuesday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Dubbed the Provoq, the model will be shown off by GM CEO Rick Wagoner at the landmark technology convention in Las Vegas.

The automaker is releasing few details about the Provoq -- which will be transported to Detroit in time for next week's media preview of the North American International Auto Show -- until Wagoner's speech Tuesday. However, a spokesman said its alternative fuel technology is being developed as part of the company's E-Flex program.

...

For those who don't know, the "Chevy Volt" is the best known model of the "E-Flex" program.

Actually, there'll be two versions, the "Fred" SUV version for men, and the "Wilma" four-door sedan for women.

6. There are zero car culture anti-nuke fundies who can even see how absurd this is.
And that says about all one needs to know how absurd, exactly, the fundie car culture anti-nuke religion is, no matter how many sockpuppets the anti-nuke faith constructs.

Frankly there is NOT ONE anti-nuke who have either enough guts or education to oppose coal, even though it is immediately clear throughout the scientific literature that coal, by far, has the highest external cost of any form of energy.

QED.

8. Waxman to Al Gore: "I also hear people say, well they've got a magic solution, nuclear power"
Waxman discussing the pro-nukes with Al Gore:

"I also hear people say, well they've got a magic solution, nuclear power, <snip>
Nuclear power is an option, you don't want to rule it out, but it's certainly no magic solution.
It almost becomes a theological expression whenever I hear discussion of these environmental issues."

9. And the winner is... hydrogen fuel cell

Cadillac Provoq Concept

Instead of making a splash in Detroit next week, GM is using the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to debut this hydrogen-powered Cadillac concept today. The underlying technology is similar to what has been planned for the Chevy Volt and an overseas concept called the Opel Flextreme.

The hydrogen-powered Provoq would travel 300 miles on a single fill of 13.2 pounds of hydrogen, held in two storage tanks under the rear cargo floor. There are also solar panels installed on the roof to power interior electronics and lighting. In true concept fashion, the already elaborate Cadillac grille has louvers that close at highway speeds to improve aerodynamics and open at low speeds to cool the fuel-cell stack.

Will we see a hydrogen-powered small SUV from Cadillac at dealers anytime soon? No way. Could we see a regular gas version of this concept at a dealer really soon? Probably. The new Saturn Vue is close to a luxury interior as it is, so Cadillac wouldn’t have to do much to adapt it. Check out the pictures below and tell us what you think.
