Georgia Power adding renewable energy (50 MW biomass)

Georgia Power has landed a fifth power purchase deal to boost the amount of energy it gets from independent renewable power producers.

Financial terms of the deal 20-year deal with Yellow Pine Energy Company LLC were not reported, though the Southern Co. (NYSE: SO) unit noted the contract is its largest to date with a renewable generator.

Yellow Pine Energy Company LLC has a wood biomass-fired facility planned near Fort Gaines, Ga. The plant will generate electricity from environmentally friendly sources such as timber harvesting residuals, lumber scraps and wood waste reclaimed from landfills.

The plant will start operating in 2010 with an output of 110 megawatts. Georgia Power will buy 50 megawatts from Yellow Pine's Fort Gaines plant.
