1. if you want to read an excellent guide to building your own, try
"A Practical Guide to Photovoltaics", by Richard J. Komp, Ph.D

It's a start to finish, easy to understand handbook of everything you ever wanted to know about solar energy and distributed energy systems.

2. Energy Independence is a misnomer
and I wish people would quit misrepresenting the meaning of the word..
