Traces of unapproved GMO trait found in U.S. corn
Fri Feb 22, 2008 5:33pm EST

By Lisa Shumaker

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Traces of an unapproved genetically
modified trait were found in U.S. corn planted in 2006 and
2007 but the grain poses no threat to food or feed safety,
said the U.S Agriculture Department on Friday.

The 2008 corn crop will not be affected when it is planted
this spring across the United States, the world's largest
corn exporter.

The unapproved GMO trait, known as Event 32, was found
in approximately three seeds per 1,000 in Herculex RW and
Herculex XTRA Rootworm Protection corn samples. The
Herculex brand is made by Dow AgroSciences LLC, a
subsidiary of Dow Chemical Co.

Grain traders said the discovery would not affect U.S.
corn sales.

"Demand is too strong and alterative suppliers too few,"
said a grain trader. "But it could make it more difficult if
there are new testing and analysis requirements. And it
certainly gives us another black eye."

1. It's inevitable
Corn pollinates; one strong gust of wind takes pollen from a GMO field across the road to a non-GMO field. GMO corn is a Pandora's box; once it's opened it can't be closed.

6. Your right
It's another example of how poorly planned and executed containment plans are for these products. Your right...basically there is no containing them once they are unleashed into the environment. 53,000 acres of the affected seed planted in the U.S. last year out of 93 million acres. I understand this is a different BT event than Monsanto's. Also basically undetectable at the elevator it's sold to. Until there is a test for checking these approved or unapproved traits...they should never be released.....of course it isn't up to me.

I sat in on a meeting the other day. Seed companies are pushing hard to include this BT event and Monsanto's BT event into their corn hybrids. Their belief is that it will virtually stop any resistance that can be developed by the insects they are designed to control. By doing this they argue that this combination can be used on 95% of the acres instead of the current 80%. This would be another windfall for the bio tech companies. I also learned we are maybe 3 -4 years away from some 8-way crosses of a multitude of bio tech gene's.....this thing is growing much faster than I ever expected.

I have a sense....and no one has actually said this....I have a sense these people believe that the ethanol industry is going to grow so fast that their may not be that much left to export....so who cares about what gene's the rest of the world doesn't want. This is only my opinion though....I don't know that for fact.

2. "Event 32"
Note to the GMO developers.

In the future dont call your modified gene monsters by names that sound like it came from a bad sci-fi horror movie in the 1950's.
