Pollution turns Chinese river red (BBC)
Water supplies to about 200,000 people in central China have been contaminated by pollution, which has turned branches of a major river system red.

At least three tributaries of the Han river - a branch of the Yangtze - have been affected.

State media reported high levels of chemicals in the water.

China is increasingly concerned about its environment. A recent ban on plastic bags has led to the country's largest bag factory shutting down.

The Xinglong, Tianguan and Dongjing rivers were all affected by the pollution, according to the state news agency Xinhua.

2. Actually, the Chinese are getting busy about this ... but it is very late already.
An enormous amount of damage has been done, and it is too late to stave off the consequences popping up all over China. The "economic growth at all costs" plan is out the window at this point.

You saw thay BANNED plastic bags, altogether? ONE factory was chugging out a quarter-million tons of bags in one year.

Their biggest problem remains nearly intractible corruption. When a bribe can circumvent regulation, the environment is bound to lose out to profit.
