Hudson Marine Management of Pennsauken, NJ has agreed on behalf of Regal Stone, Ltd, the Hong Kong based owner of the Cosco Busan, to send an initial payment of $2 million to cover some of the cleanup cost for the San Francisco oil spill. The ship being piloted by Captain John Cota, sideswiped the Bay Bridge causing approximately 54,000 gallons of oil to spill into the bay.
Additionally, scientists from the Bodega Marine Lab are tracking Pacific herring, which supports the last commercial fishery in San Francisco Bay. Red Stone is being required by the state of California to pay for a number of studies concerning the effects of the spill on marine life.
A formal assessment will be the final result of the studies and will ultimately determine the cost that the shipping company will have to pay. The USCG has already estimated that the cleanup cost are nearing $61 million, and the studies might cost many millions more.
The spill devastated the region polluting over 100 miles of shoreline and killed birds and sea mammals. The Pacific herring return to the Bay Area from November through March to spawn. While commercial herring is on the decline, it is still an important part of last commercial fishery in the San Francisco Bay.
