Let Italy deal with its own nuclear waste, says Utah agency

The Utah Radiation Control Board unanimously approved a letter to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Friday requesting that EnergySolutions be denied in its quest to import nuclear waste from Italy.

<snip>

The letter from the state cited concerns about maintaining storage capacity for domestically produced waste, as well as questioning the tact of a country that has the technology to utilize nuclear power but chooses to send its waste elsewhere.

<snip>

U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson has already weighed in against the permits in a letter to the NRC and, according to Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr.'s spokeswoman, Lisa Roskelley, Huntsman would likely draft a cover letter to accompany the document approved by the radiation control board. Roskelley said the board, all of whom are Huntsman appointees, would have the governor's full support.

<snip>

Urgo said citizen groups in Tennessee were forming alliances with groups in Utah as well as others from around the country to advocate for NRC refusal of the EnergySolutions permit applications. In addition, Urgo said a letter requesting that a Utah hearing be held by the NRC was sent in mid-February, though no response has been received.

1. We are being abused by the EU

and our own Bush government. What will they do...move to Paraguay to finish off the job while we protect them with our tax dollars?

The Brits steal (for Canada) our clean Niagara Falls power causing huge nuclear waste dumping ground in West Falls, NY, etc.(good land previously for farming). They allow oil pollution and don't pay for it. They don't pay their royalties in Alaska either.

A dumping ground for the world of nuclear waste? Now we are 3rd world.

Get out of NAFTA. It is destroying our environment (corporate farming and industrial pollution, fresh water selling, over population, mountain stripping, oil polluting by BP, and poverty, etc.). We are corporate mercenaries for the Neo cons and have more cost from troop injuries than cost of doing war for over five years.

Canada has been sending tons of garbage across the border (through Detroit) to landfills in Michigan. It will stop in year...2010?

Impeach Bush and Cheney. Their impact on our country will be felt for many generations to come. Outrageous Congress. "Free trade"? It free robbery of our resources and democracy. How can you be so irresponsible? The press certainly is since most people don't know this is going on.

I heard a radio talk show on WGN talk about a "Happiness Poll" on Americans. Most are happy. What? Whole towns in poverty, losing their health insurance homes and jobs, family in war, dollar dive treatening their savings, etc., fear mongering, etc.? Happy? What propaganda.

2. Its not only us who have no clue as to what to do with the nuclear waste
none of the other countries do either, except send it to America of course, they'll take it. We're kind of like a spoiled kid who wants everything even though we know not what to do with it.

We are not ready for nuclear energy and I'm not sure we ever will be. So many lies to tell about what to do with the waste. Even the French don't have a plan either other than send it to other countries like the us and russia for instance.

French Public's Opposition to Nuclear Waste Repositories as Deep as that in the United States

Washington, D.C.: Vice-President Cheney's claim that France has a safe and environmentally sound repository for burying radioactive waste generated by nuclear power plants is wrong, according to the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER), an independent non-profit group that has published numerous technical reports, books, and papers on nuclear waste management and related issues.

In a May 8 interview with CNN on the Bush administration's proposed energy policy, the Vice-President said: "Right now we've got waste piling up at reactors all over the country. Eventually, there ought to be a permanent repository. The French do this very successfully and very safely in an environmentally sound, sane manner. We need to be able to do the same thing."

"The facts regarding the French repository program contradict Vice-President Cheney," said Dr. Arjun Makhijani, president of IEER, who has written widely on nuclear waste issues. "France has no repository, and their siting program faces huge domestic opposition. The controversy that surrounds waste management is a thorn in the side of the French nuclear industry."

4. Oh, over in the anti-nuke cults you have a way to deal with dangerous fossil fuel waste?
I don't fucking think so.

In fact, you couldn't care less about what to do with dangerous fossil fuel waste.

People who do know what to do with so called "nuclear waste" can't get the attention of an ignorant and distracted public which prides itself on deliberate ignorance.

Nuclear power does not need to be perfect - neither technically nor in the stupid arena of public perception - to be better than everything else.

It merely needs to be better than everything else, and it is.

There is NOT ONE member of the anti-nuke fundie faith, NOT ONE, who can actually point to a person who has been injured by the storage of used nuclear fuel and there is NOT ONE member of said dogmatic fundie faith who gives a rat's ass about the 39,000 people estimated to have died from dangerous fossil fuel waste in Italy in 2004: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4283295.stm

There is NOT ONE, fundie anti-nuke who gives a rat's ass about electronic waste, I note either. If there was such a member of this cult, they wouldn't be here hawking solar cells. The main reason that no one notices dangerous solar cell waste, is that solar electricity is a trivial form of energy.

Of course, twenty years from now, when this bill begins to become due on a grander scale, the anti-nuke cult will still be uninformed, illiterate, and indifferent.

Oh, and thanks to the link for the IEER, another link in the vast circle jerk of self referential anti-nuke cult websites.

Maybe we should start posting links from fundie anti-evolution websites to "disprove" evolution.
