Patrick challenges designers to craft ’green’ buildings

Gov. Deval Patrick is challenging the state’s architects and designers to build greener buildings.

Patrick says he’s forming a task force to come up with standards to help public and private construction meet what’s called a "zero net energy" goal.

Zero net energy buildings conserve energy with better insulation and high efficiency lighting. They also use on-site renewable energy sources like solar power.

Patrick says he’d like the standards in place for all construction in Massachusetts by 2030 and would like to issue plans for the first public zero net energy building by 2010.
