(The conclusion of Kim Stanley Robinson's "Younger-Dryas" trilogy)
I want to finish the thing before I make too many comments, but I had to say I was disappointed to see his hero devoting serious inquiry to space-based solar. Of all the possible permutations on renewable energy, space-based solar is by far the most obviously unviable. KSR is one of my favorite authors, and it's kind of painful to see him fall prey to The Stupid. I really thought he knew better.
And, in a similar vein, the characters' dismissal of wind power in favor of (any) solar seemed misguided, given its cost competitiveness and higher capacity factor. I just didn't see the arguments.
None of that should be construed as an overall negative review, but it was a fly at the picnic.
