ReutersU.S. seeks comment on possible Bering Sea drillingTue Apr 8, 2008 2:56pm EDT
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Interior Department on Tuesday
asked for public and oil industry comment on possible drilling
in an area of Alaska's Bering Sea, where energy exploration
was once banned following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989.
After the Bush administration lifted the leasing ban under the
department's current five-year leasing plan, which took effect
last July, the government proposed drilling in the North
Aleutian Basin sometime in 2011.
Potential Lease Sale 214, as the government labels it, covers
about 5.6 million acres in the southeastern Bering Sea and may
hold 2.5 billion barrels of oil and 23.3 trillion cubic feet
of natural gas.
The department's Minerals Management Service (MMS), which
oversees U.S. offshore drilling activities, said it wants input
from the public about the potential leasing area to help
identify any environmental concerns.
