Climate Outlook For Hunting In US Grim - Deer, Elk Potentially Gone From West, 2/3 Loss Of Ducks
WASHINGTON - Global warming could force elk and mule deer from much of the American West. Wild trout could disappear in lower Appalachian streams. Two-thirds of the country's ducks may disappear.

EDIT

A report compiled by the Wildlife Management Institute and based on work done by the groups provided a glimpse of their concerns. It says:

_Prairie pothole regions essential for waterfowl could lose 90 percent of their wetlands, causing a 69 percent decline in North America's breeding ducks.

_About 42 percent of the trout and salmon habitat could be lost by the end of the century, with bull trout virtually disappearing in the high mountain West and wild trout from lower Appalachian streams.

_The number of Pronghorn antelope, elk and mule deer will dwindle as rising temperatures allow trees and shrubs to overwhelm the sagebrush ecosystem in the West.

_Populations of bobwhite quail will shrink in the Deep South as summertime drought and higher temperatures disrupt their breeding cycles. And drier conditions in fall and early spring will threaten quail in the Southwest.

2. Won't this put the conservatives in a tizzy?
Global warming is a myth; everything is fine. Except that global warming is destroying the very thing that defines me. Except that global warming doesn't exist. Except for when it is responsible for killing all the ducks and elks and trout and quail. But how can something that doesn't exist still cause so many problems?

*Sniff* Is that woodsmoke I smell?

3. how many Americans will (or could) hear this information...
Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 08:50 AM by islandmkl
and their response will be "So?"...

where Paris Hilton went last night or who did what on 'American Idol' is of much more importance (and attention) of most Americans than the barometer that nature provides...

if other living things are dying around us, it is just a matter of time till our place on the extinct list moves to the top...

hey...nobody lives forever, right?

5. true, but as the post above you mentions
it may change the way some conservative hunters feel about the issue. I know quite a few folks who are conservative mainly because they are afraid that Democrats want to take away their guns, and most of them also deny global climate change. It will be interesting to see if this news reaches them, and how they will react.

7. Anybody have a link to the Wildlife Management Institute report?
I can't find it on their website. I am an active angler and like to taunt RW deniers on fishing websites -- the full report would make good material.

8. If Peak Oil-induced food shortages hit the US, poachers will strip nature of the remaining wildlife
If anything even close to the food riots of Haiti come to the US, you won't find much wildlife left in the wild (except for regions far from population centers).

9. Animals decreasing, brown people increasing -- all part of God's plan.
