1. It is what it is.
Pick a product and come up with a better way to produce it for the mass society.

i.e. a computer.

2. Part of the feedback loop
Like totalitarian agriculture, mass production is both an answer to increased demand and a driver of it. From a pure resource efficiency point of view it's part of the solution. From a view that takes into account the Jevons paradox and the spread of externalities thoughout the air, land and water, it's a catastrophe.

We're trapped in it for the moment, though, because there are too many of us. As our population begins to slide we will find many opportunities to do things differently.
