http://www.590klbj.com/News/Story.aspx?ID=89300Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson and Austin Mayor Will Wynn announced details of what they are calling an historic solar energy lease today. Austin Energy has agreed to lease 438 acres in Reeves County from the state. Patterson calls the partnership between the Renewable Energy Division of the Land Office and Austin Energy as an "important first step in assessing and developing the solar potential of West Texas state lands".
"The powerful West Texas sun is an asset we're ready to exploit, just like oil or gas or wind power," Patterson said. "Austin Energy should be commended for their pioneering outlook on developing renewable energy."
The energy collected by the solar panels will go to the state-wide ERCOT grid.
Patterson created the Renewable Energy Division at the Land Office last year to focus on developing renewable energy resources on state lands for the benefit of the state's Permanent School Fund.
