http://www.energynews.co.za/web_main/article.php?story=20080420212154670Texas oil tycoon T Boone Pickens will make his first down payment this month for 500 wind turbines, the first of a total of 2 700 that will cost $10 billion to construct what he expects will become the world's largest wind farm.
The Texan's ambitious plan, which he expects to take four years, is five times bigger than the world's current largest wind farm, and when completed will generate 4 000 MW of electricity, mainly during the peak times in middle of the day when power sells for a premium.
The wind farm will be situated in a region that German wind technicians who have poured into the area have called the Wind West. The area is home to the three largest wind farms in the USA, which together produce more wind power than the UK, France and California.
Wind energy generation is proving to be a source of economic upliftment in the area, as the local town is enjoying a construction boom as companies emerge to service turbine blades and rent our cranes for erecting the large wind turbines.
