Was there ever a follow up to the story about the internet cable 'cuts'
a couple of months ago? It seemed from what I read at the time that Iran was the primary
'target' or suffered the biggest loss in that deal (as they were about to launch their oil bourse).

So what's the latest?

1. From what I recall, they tracked down two ships which both dragged...
...anchors inappropriately through those spots with uncanny timing. You can Google more in Google News.

2. There WAS...

and while it was reported that this was "an accident" and not "terrorism" or something... it is also true that two small ships were "impounded" and the captains license yanked for the operators. Then it was all hushed up and flushed down the memory hole.

Much like the Anthrax story in Las Vegas... a few dribs and drabs but, apparently, no big story (:sarcasm:)

And the misplaced nuclear triggers.

And the mis-shipped nuclear weapons.

And... and... and...

3. Posting From Alexandria, Egypt
A couple of follow-up stories. One story, widely reported in the local press, said the Egyptian government had ordered all ISPs to give customers one month of FREE service. I have seen no evidence of that rumor coming true yet. :-)

These stories also said repairs were continuing on the cuts. I do not know if they are completed even yet. A cable-repair ship was in the neighborhood here, off the coast of Alexandria, and that was also mentioned.

To recap what I know, from local news sources. You may have better sources:

--There were THREE separate cable cuts. The first two were off the coast of Egypt, on or about 31 January. I remember the date because I was going on vacation in Italy on 1 Feb. Suddenly all the travel companies lost their Internet access, so reservations could not be made or confirmed. The only personal impact, since I already had reservations: I had to get my own train ticket from Rome to Venice, which was not a big deal.

--The third cable cut, IIRC in the Indian Ocean, was allegedly caused when a ship lost its 5-ton anchor. The anchor landed or on near the cable, and got dragged over the cable repeatedly by underwater currents.

--In Egypt, businesses lost billions of dollars because of the Internet outage, especially the banks.

4. If I recall correctly,
satellite photos showed several boats had dropped anchor in off limits areas.

I've read that there are cable cuts daily. Redundancy usually resolves networking issues. But sometimes key cables are hit. Hence the "don't drop anchor here" regions. :-)
