A couple of follow-up stories. One story, widely reported in the local press, said the Egyptian government had ordered all ISPs to give customers one month of FREE service. I have seen no evidence of that rumor coming true yet. :-)
These stories also said repairs were continuing on the cuts. I do not know if they are completed even yet. A cable-repair ship was in the neighborhood here, off the coast of Alexandria, and that was also mentioned.
To recap what I know, from local news sources. You may have better sources:
--There were THREE separate cable cuts. The first two were off the coast of Egypt, on or about 31 January. I remember the date because I was going on vacation in Italy on 1 Feb. Suddenly all the travel companies lost their Internet access, so reservations could not be made or confirmed. The only personal impact, since I already had reservations: I had to get my own train ticket from Rome to Venice, which was not a big deal.
--The third cable cut, IIRC in the Indian Ocean, was allegedly caused when a ship lost its 5-ton anchor. The anchor landed or on near the cable, and got dragged over the cable repeatedly by underwater currents.
--In Egypt, businesses lost billions of dollars because of the Internet outage, especially the banks.
