Disappearing Foods: Encouraging a Comeback
Disappearing Foods: Encouraging a Comeback
A new book, "Renewing America's Food Traditions" by Gary Paul Nabhan, identifies 93 foods once common in American kitchens but now in danger of disappearing. Some are livestock breeds or varieties of crop plants; others are wild species such as the Carolina flying squirrel.

This article includes and interactive map of North America showing foods that are fast disappearing in your area.

Should I cross post this in the Gardening and/or cooking and baking forum?

2. Anybody old enough to remember...
"Sailor Boy Pilot Bread" in the blue and white box. (aka "hardtack", "ship's bread", or "sea biscuit"), Basically a form of bread with a shelf life of several years. A good way to store calories over the winter.

11. K&R for heirloom veggies.
The only thing "wrong" with a lot of these is that they aren't amenable to machine processing, or don't ship and store well. If you only buy fresh and local, that's not a problem, and you get more tasty & nutritious choices.
