Bush Urges Buying From Local Farmers To Help Fight Food Prices, Scarcity
No, I am not kidding.

George W. Bush -- dark green? I kid you not. Here's what he said in his press conference today:

"One thing I think that would be -- I know would be very creative policy is if we -- is if we would buy food from local farmers as a way to help deal with scarcity, but also as a way to put in place an infrastructure so that nations can be self-sustaining and self-supporting. It's a proposal I put forth that Congress hasn't responded to yet, and I sincerely hope they do."

I have no idea what he's talking about -- what proposal did he put forward to Congress about local food? But I'm sure the 100-Mile Diet folks are on the phone with the White House right now.

As somebody else noted, maybe he slipped something into the Farm Bill?

1. Just riffing on some key words his staff skimmed off Teh Google.
"Yeah, mention buy-local, and mix it up with do-nothing-congress, yada yada"

3. Holy crap.
I agree with something he said?! :wow: Local food is something we definitely try to do, though it's not really a "new" idea but rather a very old one, at this point...

4. Need local meat processing ability
Yes, it would need gov't oversight, but if beef could be processed locally/regionally at a moderate scale, it would help alot of people.

6. Holy crap! I agree with Bush!
If local market demand went up.. People would grow their own stuff to sell on it! And that will scare the food prices down somewhat.

8. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn sometimes.
though somehow I doubt the administration has bought into the larger concepts about community food security.

More likely a Reagan in Reykjavik moment.

10. I read somewhere that he only eats organic food
cooked by his own chef.

I do not know if this is true, and can't even remember where I read it. But it made me furious as I am an organic farmer and I do not want to be sustaining him.
