Ocean Cooling to Briefly Halt Global Warming, Researchers Say
"April 30 (Bloomberg) -- Parts of North America and Europe may cool naturally over the next decade, as shifting ocean currents temporarily blunt the global-warming effect caused by mankind, Germany's Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences said.

Average temperatures in areas such as California and France may drop over the next 10 years, influenced by colder flows in the North Atlantic, said a report today by the institution based in Kiel, Germany. Temperatures worldwide may stabilize in the period."

While I hope that this turns out to be true, a few things occurred to me:

This is exactly what one would expect from all the fresh water flooding into the Atlantic from the melting of the polar ice cap, though it now appears unlikely that it will lead to a new ice age as some had believed. Human CO2 emissions are just too overwhelming to allow that cycle to kick in.

Second, they seem to be saying average global temperatures will just level off for the next decade, not decline, when they say that worldwide temps will stabilize. Certain areas will cool slightly, while other areas will continue to warm. Bear in mind that the current melting we're seeing in the Arctic won't stop, because that melting is due to current temps. Just stabilizing at the temps we currently have for the next 10 years is still catastrophic.

Also, the reporter on BBC Radio last night stated that after 10 years, the researchers expect human-induced warming to overtake the natural cooling and off we go again.

1. definitely colder here in PNW this year
I've never seen a spring like this. Still in the 40s and 50s, windy and rainy.

2. It is cold in NE as well, except for a freaky day or two where it was quite warm. nt

4. That's happened in the Northwest as well
A couple of very freaky hot days, caused by thermal troughs, interspersed with long periods of unusually cold weather out of the gulf of Alaska.

If the pattern holds, anyone backpacking in the high country this summer would do well to be prepared for snow....

3. Vegas, May 1, and today *might* hit 70.
Of course, we've already had a couple spells in the low 90s, but this is freaky cool for here in May.

5. That headline is a CROCK!
Warming hasn't halted. The only change a surface temperature change that tells us absolutely nothing about the total amount of heat retained in an ocean with an average depth of 20,000 feet.

I hate the press.

6. I will take a decade over everything else.
Of course the deniers will say this means no global warming. However, fuck em. I am happy we might have small break to do stuff in.

This is the window to get another system online!

8. I am one of the idiots that still keeps an open mind to those who...
talk about sun spots and the heating and cooling of the sun as warming factors, I still try to do my part because if man made affects are the main culprit, I want to be a part of the cure instead of the problem but I refuse to close my mind to others who don't accept the honest government and medias take on the situation and that speak the complete opposite about global warming and its causes.

Some say that there are different types of ice, Antarctica for instance, the ice cap is increasing in size not decreasing, the south pole has been cooling since they have been keeping temperatures there, not warming and around the edge what they call shelf ice which is what breaks off and is usually pointed at as a result of global warming. I just think its best to do what we feel is right but always keep an open mind to those outside of the media, the government and those who are controlled by the government, it cant hurt.

Keep in mind that I always wear my :tinfoilhat: so that could affect how I look at things. Anytime I post anything like this I get ripped to shreds but its just my opinion and no one has to agree with my opinions, its ok

Proceedings of the Royal Society "the observed rapid rise in global mean temperatures seen after 1985 cannot be ascribed to solar variability, whichever of the mechanism is invoked and no matter how much the solar variation is amplified."

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciencesl Although solar and volcanic effects appear to dominate most of the slow climate variations within the past thousand years, the impacts of greenhouse gases have dominated since the second half of the last century."

Science "The variations measured from spacecraft since 1978 are too small to have contributed appreciably to accelerated global warming over the past 30 years."

Geophysical Research Letters "since 1975 global warming has occurred much faster than could be reasonably expected from the sun alone."

Journal of Climate"most warming over the last 50 yr is likely to have been caused by increases in greenhouse gases."

7. Put ice in your drink and it cools down
But when all the ice is gone, it's back up to room temp in no time at all.

10. That's good, it might buy some time...
Adjusting to sustainable farming is going to be hard enough. Adjusting to sustainable farming while the growing zones are sneaking off North would be a nightmare.

11. Proof to Cons that Climate Change is BS?
I don't see how a huge percentage of people will interpret this as anything else. "Trust us the worlds getting warmer, except not right now. "

15. Except that it won't get colder globally
What the scientists in this study say is that global temperatures will STABILIZE at NEAR-RECORD HIGHS for the next decade or so, and then GO EVEN HIGHER.

Cooling in one portion of the planet will be offset by warming elsewhere, resulting in a temperature plateau for a few years, not a decline.
