Alternative energy no quick fix for world -oil execs

Sat Jun 7, 2008 7:05pm BST

ST PETERSBURG, Russia, June 7 (Reuters) - Alternative energy sources such as solar, wind power and biofuels will not provide the answer to global energy shortages for at least the next 10 years, major oil company executives said on Saturday. Such forms of energy are expensive to develop, despite record oil prices, and would require further research before providing a viable alternative to oil and gas, Western oil major officials said during the St Petersburg Economic Forum.

"Alternatives are not going to solve the challenges the world faces over the next decade," Tony Hayward, chief executive of BP Plc, told a roundtable meeting during the forum.

"It's a very important development in the long term." Chevron Corp Chief Executive David O'Reilly said his company had made steps to develop alternative energy sources, but it was a very small part of its overall business.

"Despite being the largest producer of geothermal energy in the world, this comprises less than 2 percent of the company's energy," said O'Reilly, who heads the second-largest U.S. oil company.

14. They were presented with the same forms of alternative energy
at the first international energy conference in London in 1974 that are being discussed today. They opposed them then. They oppose them now. They don't want anyone to believe that alternative energy is realistic. Don't believe them. Don't believe the naysayers. It will be a difficult transition, but then we are a nation that can do difficult things. We are the descendants of adventurers, of risk-takers. We love challenge. Alternative energy is the future. Oil is the past.

Remember, we are the nation that built the first atomic bomb. We can do anything. We just have to stop wasting our energy and resources on wars.

15. Quite the true statement
Anyone believing we can replace oil with any so called alternative knows little about oil and these so called alternatives.. No amount of alternatives will replace the millions of barrels per day that we will need in the coming decades.. As oil production falls worldwide and exports decline, what alternative combined will replace that oil?? NONE!!!

18. If we use the alternatives we have available now, and effeciency changes like hybrids...
we can SLOW our depletion of oil so we can find better alternatives.

It is not an all or nothing deal.

Just as some people say solar can't meet all our needs because the sun isn't out at night--fine. Use old fashioned dirty energy for those low usage hours. What we save by using solar during the day will still make a difference.

Actually, some guy figured out how to make solar panels that work at night too:
