BP Alternative Energy plans for office in San Francisco

San Francisco Business Times - by Lindsay Riddell

BP America, the biggest producer of oil and gas in the United States, plans to open an office for its alternative energy division in San Francisco.

BP is considering several locations that will house the new office of BP Alternative Energy, said spokeswoman Sarah Howell. BP Alternative Energy was started in 2005 and its headquarters are in Houston. BP has been steadily growing its presence in Northern California even though the company doesn't have BP-branded gas stations here.

In 2007, the company seeded the Energy Biosciences Institute at UC Berkeley with $500 million to develop biofuels. Its partners include the University of California, Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. BP's solar arm has an office in Fairfield. And the company announced at the end of 2006 a partnership with Vacaville-based Old Country Roofing to offer solar packages to homebuilders. The entire division of BP Solar employs 2,300.

BP Alternative Energy includes BP's efforts in solar, wind, hydrogen power, low and zero-carbon power generation, natural gas-fired power plants, biofuels and distributed energy for emerging markets. The company said in 2007 it will invest up to $8 billion in alternative energy businesses over the next 10 years.
