Rare Mediterranean marsh birds have made double history by nesting in Britain after invading en masse last winter.
As well as this being the first-ever breeding in the UK by cattle egrets, scientific name Bubulcus ibis, the species is believed to have not previously reared a family in the wild so far north in the world.
The pioneering pair - and experts would not be surprised if there is news to come of further nests - raised at least one youngster at a secret location in Somerset.
This was actually the most predicted bird event of the year because so many cattle egrets poured into south-west Britain after November that it seemed clear the scene was set for colonisation.
