Country Garden’s turbine said to be first of commercial scale on Cape

With another new shipment early this week, there were plenty of Christmas trees at Country Garden on West Main Street in Hyannis. But company treasurer Diana Duffley’s present wasn’t under any of them.
What she wanted was the gleaming Northwind 100 turbine on the property, which was spinning more than 100 feet above while it converted wind to energy.

“She was operational all night,” a jubilant Duffley wrote Dec. 23 in an e-mail to the Patriot. “I can hardly stop smiling.”

In its own release, SED said Country Garden’s tower “is the first commercial scale wind turbine, not only in Hyannis, but on all of Cape Cod. The 100-kiloWatt turbine, which is expected to pay for itself in five to seven years, is projected to bring Country Garden $30,000 in electric savings.”

That should be enough to excite a company’s treasurer, but this week Duffley shared another statistic that pleases her, “We’ll be offsetting 114 tons of carbon dioxide in a year,” she said, “and hundreds of pounds of nitrous oxide and sulfur oxide.”
