President Obama has weighed in heavily on the need for energy efficient cars as part of his auto bailout plan and his agenda for a green economy. Plug-in electric vehicles are a significant part of this agenda.
The economic stimulus package sets aside $2 billion in grants for manufacturing advanced batteries, plus tax credits to cover the cost of manufacturing. This is in addition to $7.5 billion in loans authorized in a previous bill for manufacturing advanced technology for vehicles, which includes batteries.
San Francisco, which already has the highest number of hybrid car owners in the country, has demonstrated a commitment to the future of the electric vehicle by beginning to establish the infrastructure needed to run electric cars.
Electric Vehicle charging stations installed outside San Francisco City Hall
San Francisco’s first three electric vehicle-charging stations were recently installed in front of the City Hall. The Smartlet™ Networked Charging Stations Coulomb Technologies along with the City of San Francisco. This is a pilot project to power San Francisco’s plug-in fleet and car-share plug-in vehicles. Coulomb’s charging infrastructure is providing the City of San Francisco special networked features that address electric vehicle fleet needs.
