Freeman Dyson contests some of the widely assumed results of global warming. He does not contest global warming itself. Today, the NYT published a long profile of Dyson- who is a fascinating character and undoubtedly a brilliant scientist. His field is physics, so his field obviously isn't climate change, but does that mean that he shouldn't opine about it?
Media Matters slams the NYT for this piece; ostensibly because the author isn't a science writer. He has a background in the arts and sports. But this is NOT a science article, it's a piece about Dyson and includes his views on global warming as well as on many other topics.
Imo, it's a terrific piece. Yes, Dyson's views on global warming's threat, are out of the scientific mainstream and provocative, but so what? Why shouldn't the NYT publish an article about someone who dissents from a generally accepted view, particularly if they make note of this and present the the response from those in the maninstream? And they do.
