Spain leads on concentrated solar

Published: March 31, 2009 at 9:58 AM

LONDON, March 31 (UPI) -- Spain is the current world leader in the concentrated photovoltaic industry, according to a recent report from London-based CPV Today.

Concentrated photovoltaics offers a way to provide more affordable and simpler solar power, the industry group CPV Today said.

"Highly concentrated CPV represents an important technological leap, as it is very different to traditional photovoltaic panels," CPV Today founder Belen Gallego said in a statement. "For this reason we can argue that a CPV specific feed-in tariff is necessary."

The cost of concentrated photovoltaics is expected to drop by about 62 percent by 2015, and its efficiency is expected to increase to about 50 percent, making it a viable solution to some of the world's energy problems.
