Lockheed "going green" with biomass facility

OWEGO, N.Y. -- "We've reduced our carbon footprint by a quarter and reduced our needs for fossil fuels, which is great for the environment," said Lauren Condoluci, a Lockheed spokesperson.

That's all thanks to a $5.5 million biomass facility the company built in 2008.

It helps power Lockheed's 1.6 million square foot Owego plant, knocking off 8,000 metric tons of carbon output each year.

But for all its levers and pulleys the fully automated system is actually pretty simple.

"The trucks come to the facility and the storage area. They have a live floor that moves those chips out of the truck and into our storage facility and then two 600 ton boilers produce steam to feed our whole campus," said Nick Scalzo, the biomass facility's project manager.
