Czech Republic Revitalizing Brownfields with Solar

Yesterday Conergy announced that it is building its second megawatt-class solar park in the Czeck Republic. This solar plant is being built on a brownfield site – one that used to be a pig farm. The 1.48-MW solar power plant is being built near Velký Týnec, about 80 km to the north-east of the Czech Republic's second-largest city Brno.

Because the site was a former pig farm, the land was not suitable for farming or other agricultural endeavors. Conergy said that the solar park will revitalize the land and restore it to its natural state.

On an area about the size of five World Cup soccer fields, the company will install 1,640 Conergy 225 PM modules and 3,894 Conergy 230 PM modules that will be attached to SolarLinea mounting systems. The company says that the SolarLinea system was developed specifically for open areas. Five Conergy IPG 300 power inverters will feed the electricity into the public network.

The Czech Republic has been a hot market for solar PV in 2009 and 2010 with 1-GW of PV capacity installed under its feed-in tariff scheme. A recent iSupply report however, predicts a drop in demand for 2011 due to government regulations that will reduce the 2011 tariffs.
