Benefits available to former nuclear workers

Former nuclear workers at five Missouri facilities may be eligible for benefits under a federal compensation program for those who got sick as a result of exposure to toxic materials on the job, the Labor Department said Monday.

The benefits are available under a law administered by the department's Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation. Survivors of qualified workers may also be entitled to compensation.

Eligible individuals or survivors may receive a lump sum of $150,000 plus medical expenses for covered conditions caused by exposure to radiation, beryllium or silica while working for the Department of Energy or as a contractor or subcontractor.

The department said it has so far provided more than $143.6 million in compensation and medical benefits to eligible Missourians, and more than $6.9 billion nationwide.
