By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Russian Subscribers

Today as the Earth continues reeling from an almost total years effects of Massive Storms, Massive Earthquakes, Catastrophic Tsunamis, Unprecedented Volcanic Eruptions, Threats of Total Global War, Global Weather System Chaos and the soon to be upon us all Avian Flu Pandemic of Historical proportions, the world today has suffered yet another blow by news from the Amazon Regions of Brazil that a State of Emergency has been declared due to lack of rain, and as we can read as reported by the CNN News Service in their article titled "Brazil declares disaster areas in Amazon, Worst drought it decades drying key rivers" and which says:

1. Hey, THEY'RE the ones who've been deforesting the Amazon
for years. They've been warned time after time, but have continued to give the world lung cancer (so to speak) for the tree money....

5. who was behind all those coups?
all of latin america has suffered for generations from governments who either pandered to the pig or were quickly replaced- the question is: who was in the drivers seat all that time? the people? NO! the people now are being represented, and you can be damn sure ruining the amazon, or polluting the air, or wrecking the water etc are not what any people want! And the representative government is now finding out what the pig has done

10. It's not just beef for McDonald's.
Former ranch lands of the Gran Chaco have been converted to soybean and maybe corn fields to produce for the Chinese export market. The ranchers then chop down trees in the Amazon forest to make more grazing land.

In addition, land devoted to sugar cane for ethanol production is increasing. I don't know if this additional land was formerly Amazon forest.

14. I think there is plenty of blame to go around.
The matter is a crisis no matter who is responsible. The injection, by the United States, of 20 to 25% of the new carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is an important contributor to the problem. It isn't solely a problem of too many lumberjacks.

I note that many Americans buy Brazilian wood.

Not just Brazilians, but all humanity, has an interest in the Amazon. It is one of the world's greatest river systems, with vast unparalleled ecological, aesthetic and scientific importance.

19. The real demand for exotic wood is Japan and newly-affluent Asian markets
Meanwhile, many people in North America and Europe are discovering that bamboo makes a great and cost-effective floor, and it's a renewable (crop) resource.

Peace.

23. I have not, to my knowledge, ever seen a bamboo floor.
I have seen many hardwood floors, and for that matter, tables and other furniture in the US.

I really don't think that the impact on the environment is strictly an Asian problem. I repeat that there is plenty of blame to go around.

24. Here's a link for bamboo flooring
http://www.ecofriendlyflooring.com/bamboo.html

Because bamboo is a woody grass, not a tree, it grows extraordinarily fast, and can be renewed easily after it's harvested. Grasses have a more efficient photosynthesis than trees, too, which means groves of bamboo are more ecofriendly than groves of trees, as they consume fewer resources per unit of produced biomass.

As for your other point, I also don't think the tropical forest-impact problem is strictly driven by Asian markets. However, you may find the following article interesting.

Here's a snip:

"Finding a balance between nature, technology and culture is the theme of the world exhibition, EXPO 2005, which opened in Japan earlier this year. In reality it is about technology and the economy, with little regard to Japan's huge appetite for tropical timber which is driving the illegal logging catastrophe in many third world countries."

And another:

"China is heavily involved in illegal overseas logging, having ended its own logging industry in 1998 to prevent flooding."

Peace.

27. Well, if I've seen a bamboo floor, it seems as if I wouldn't have known it
That is a nice floor and thank you for turning me on to it.

I still am not willing to place the onus of tropical wood importation solely on Asia however. In general we do better environmentally if we all accept responsibility.

28. I do agree with you
North Americans are currently part of the problem, not part of the solution. Only by sharing responsibility will all parties come together to fix this.

Peace.

4. Welcome to DU Solve_et_Coagula!
The choice of many to ignore science for profits is creating more horrors than anyone can begin to imagine, with more to come. Mother Earth will survive just fine in the long run, but when she decides a massive cleansing is in order...

I find the Children of Winter very interesting. Can you direct me to anymore links? I can't afford the book at this time and nothing came up at Dogpile. Thank you.

Again, I welcome you to DU. :toast: :hi:

In peace and hope,
V

"Sorcha Faal", whoever he/she is, is now editor of the website formerly run by David Booth of "Planet X on course to destroy the Earth" notoriety.

On edit: correct for the *environmental* story.

8. Folks should look into the human destruction of the Amazon.
Raising soy to feed to cattle is a huge culprit. Just one more reason to stop eating meat.

20. Using unreliable sources
Sorcha Faal is a modern-day apocalyptic. She's repackaged the old myth of "war in heaven" for contemporary readers. Her website contains a Buzzflash-style news page, most of which is from mainstream sources. You may or may not agree with her mystical ideology, but she's passionately anti-Bush, so she occasionally finds news about him and his misdeeds earlier than many other website and blog proprietors -- she's had two or three "scoops" in her time.

There's no need to discount a story because it was picked up, commented on, or even written by someone with an unusual point of view. I just follow their primary sources to determine whether the story is reliable or not. The advantage of the approach is that it allows me to use very wacky sources. Apocalyptics and mystics usually pick up on frightening news early. If the original source checks out as reliable, I cite that. This approach permits the use of nearly anyone's intuition without having to believe the spin, hype, or fantasy.

In this case, Sorcha Faal is covering a well-reported eco-catastrophe in progress. The so-called "doom criers" used to say, "someday, the Amazon basin rain forest will be destroyed, and the consequences will be grave." Well, "someday" is just about here.

It's sad, though, how we rely on people like Faal to articulate our fears first, in order to determine how much acceptance or ridicule they'll generate.

who he? he who wrote the book on Planet X, which was comin' to destroy the earth. it's long overdue, and Booth, apparently, has retired to his farm. or Booth could be Sorcha Faal.

26. Good explanation of who she is...
Thanks! I agree with your summary of "sources" and the usefulness of a variety of sources and being able to "filter" out their methods or angle.

She may or may not be someone of an apocalyptic viewpoint, but it seems to me, that if one does filter out some of the noise, there is still much truth there....

25. The environmental problems are real; avian flu probably not of
similar magnitude. Much hype there. Immune boosters are available to reduce flu incidence and effects.
And flu is treatable effectively, by means other than antibiotics.

The global environmental problems as related to global population growth,
and energy dependence are by far the worlds largest problems

with terrorism and avian flu mostly distractions promoted and publicized to take peoples attention off the fact that
the real problems aren't being addressed by the current elites in control of the U.S. political and media establishments.
