They emanate from the top of the city's Union Avenue School — strange, terrifying shrieks of alarm and fear. For local residents, it's a stark reminder to stay away. The roof of this school is off limits.

Haven't heard them?

Well, by residents we mean seagulls, and the shrieks of terror are simply a recording of a seagull's distress call played continually through a squawk box.

“It's supposed to be the sound of a warning,” Superintendent of Schools Dominick Potena said as he carefully moved through the rows of panels. “It's supposed to scare seagulls off and keep them away. It's something we had to put in because they look for large flat roofs to drop the clam shells. These panels are about $800 apiece, and the last thing we need is clamshell damage up here.”
