1. Electrical Transmission and Fuel Efficiency
There is a great deal of electricity lost in the powerlines... think of them as GIANT resistors that convert electrical energy into heat energy that is dissipated into the atmosphere.

Likewise, think of the fuel that is wasted on low-efficiency vehicles that aren't necessary in most applications of residential (unless you live in hilly/snowy regions... it's wasteful to run SUVs in downtown Manhattan).

2. So, if we were to do something sane like invest in transmission
technology, we could do ourselves and the environment a huge favor as well as make ourselves safer? Problem is that so many people running the country don't want that. I think the oil/ME lobbies want our asses over that barrel.
