Big flap over 'senseless murder' of chicken
A live chicken has been slaughtered on the stage of one of Cape Town's most popular theatres.

Disgusted arts lovers stormed out of the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch after the animal had its throat cut and was left to bleed to death.

Now the SPCA has launched an inquiry and is considering bringing a prosecution against the Baxter and director Brett Bailey.

The chicken was killed on Saturday, minutes before the end of the closing night of the run of iMumbo Jumbo.

This is one way I feel society is clue-less to what's going on to feed the world. Millions of chickens live and die a horrible death each day to be stuffed inside our mouths. We just don't see it happening anymore because we are removed from our planet. I honestly did not equate slabs of 'chicken' 'steak' in the super market with actually coming from live animals. I know we are told that but I don't think children really understand the connection.

1. I don't get it
Do you know how electricity is made?

I don't really get this argument in this context. Is this about eating animals or is it about animal cruelty?

Without doubt, industrial farming is abhorrent, unhealthy and environmentally destructive and we are insulated from it. However, I'd eat meat if I had to kill the animals myself to do so. That's just me. I admire enormously those who forego eating meat but ethically I'm kind of ambivalent about who / what eats what.

What are you getting at?

2. I've said for a long time now
that if we all had to kill our own food, we'd have a great deal more respect for life in general on this planet. It does seem odd that a theater full of people, most of which probably had chicken for dinner at least once in the last week were horrified by the death of a chicken. There is some serious irony there. I agree with you. We sure are removed from our planet if we haven't a clue how the animals we consume get to our plate.

4. My grandma slaughtered live chickens
And I bet these people have no qualms about killing a snake or termite.
