Orangutans 'face greater threat' (BBC)
Illegal logging is destroying forests in South-East Asia quicker than had been feared, with dire implications for orangutans, a UN report has said.

The practice threatens many other species in the region, the United Nations Environment Programme says.

If no action is taken, the report says, 98% of forests on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo may be gone by 2022.

This would have serious consequences for local people and wildlife including rhinos, tigers and elephants.

"The situation is now acute for the orangutans," the authors wrote.

1. There are way too many people in this world.
The world can no longer sustain us.
We are killing and destroying everything in the only world we can ever know, just to make room for and sustain us.
It is reaching the tipping point, if it has not already, where all that will be left will be weed species. Cockroaches, rats, bindweed...

4. But not for much longer
Once energy becomes expensive, so will agriculture, especially since growing organic, green biofuel will be so much more lucrative than growing food.

The wondrous marketplace will correct overpopulation. The Invisible Hand will squeeze the life out of billions of people. But we rich folks in America will be safe. We will look on in horror and weep our crocodile tears.

"How could this have happened?" we will ask as we hold rock concerts to relieve a few days' hunger among only the very cutest of the dying children. "It must be those damned crooked local politicians and warlords!"

The next horseman -- disease -- will be dispatched to dispatch us.

3. I am selfishly glad to be 55
I can hardly deal anymore with the environmental and species tragedies that have been looming for so long and that are ruining this magnificent planet. It's not that we are too many. It's that we are too violent and too stupid.
