U.S. Steel to pay $350K for pollution in Detroit River
U.S. Steel Corp. will pay $300,000 in civil fines and another $50,000 to reimburse the state for investigation costs related to zinc and ammonia pollution in the Detroit River.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality announced the fines Thursday, part of an agreement to resolve about 170 discharge violations related to three facilities in Wayne County.

U.S. Steel took over the facilities from bankrupt National Steel in 2003.

"Through this settlement, both Michigan's environment and Michigan's economy benefit," DEQ Director Steven Chester said in a statement.
