The installation of the one kilowatt-hour photovoltaic array will convert sunlight to electricity and support a portion of the electrical needs of the building.
“We are celebrating this experimental, one kwh panel that we have on our roof that can be both an educational device and a reminder that, when you go by that panel every day, that there is tremendous energy to be harnessed from the sun and it doesn’t take people’s broken backs in the (coal) mines to do it,” said President Larry Shinn during the dedication.
“This is the wave of the future. How quickly? We don’t know, but it has to reach the point where we at the college can actually afford to do a project like this without taking away resources we need to educate our students,” he said. “But, I see this as just opening the crack in the door.”
