22 die in 'danger' mine flood (CNN) {China}
BEIJING, China (AP) -- At least 22 people died and seven others were missing after a mine in northeast China flooded, state media said Sunday.

Xinhua News Agency said the accident took place Saturday night in a state-owned mine in Fushan, an industrial city east of the Liaoning provincial capital of Shenyang.

Xinhua described the mine as one of the 45 most dangerous coal mines in China and said that by late Sunday afternoon rescuers had recovered 22 bodies and were searching for the others.

China's coal mines are the world's deadliest, with numerous fires, floods and other disasters every year despite repeated official promises to improve safety.

The government says about 4,750 people died in coal mine accidents last year, an average of 13 a day.

Ah, coal ... God's rebuttal of Malthus.

1. Now the next time any of you put down MSHA
Remember this. China has the highest death rate among miners in the world. There is no oversight and the miners pay the consequences. We have the Mining Safety and Health Administration here in America and it works a damn sight better than anything in China.

2. I think the only time anyone around here "puts down" MSHA is when ...
it doesn't do its job because it's been packed with Bu**sh** cronies, rather than competent, commited inspectors & administrators.

Except, of course, the trolls. :)

4. The same applies next time any of you put down the nuclear power industry's safety record!
> Now the next time any of you put down MSHA ...

More people are killed each year even in your "safe" mines than in the
entire nuclear power industry. And I mean "directly killed" rather than
the more obvious "indirectly killed by coal-fired pollution".

Sort of puts *that* into perspective too doesn't it?
:hi:

5. ... which means that Americans shopping at Wal-Mart are ...?
... how can one politely put this? "... consuming the output"?

6. *cough*
> The government says about 4,750 people died in coal mine accidents

... just in China ...

... and these are the *official* statistics (tend not to be pessimistic) ...

... only counting miners killed in accidents not through health issues ...

... not counting the number killed indirectly by pollution ...

... not even considering the number being killed globally by climate change ...

Gosh. Just think how many have died in the nuclear power industry over
the same period of time. Not just in China but around the world.

Hmmm?
