He was working for MITRE Corporation, THE most important Defense Dept high tech R&D company, notable for their having set up the U.S. commercial and Air Force air security systems (and, with "interoperability," air security systems worldwide) and current work on drones. Wheeler was working on cyber security/cyber warfare. He had one of the top security clearances in the country and his career included having written the report on bio/chem weapons that got those weapons banned. (But he is probably most well-known for being the man behind the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.)
His body was found in a landfill in Wilmington on Dec 31, after a series of strange events, that point to his having been dosed with an interrogation/control drug, his home invaded during Christmas when he was not there and the kitchen floorboards being torn up (--although the police may have torn up the floorboards looking for something), and two sightings of him on surveillance video and a number of reports of people who talked to him over a 2-day period in Wilmington, indicating that his briefcase had been stolen (or he thought it had been stolen), that he was, at times, confused and disheveled, but able to speak coherently at other times, that he didn't want help (he refused all help--offers of money, cab ride, calls to police) and was avoiding his home (it was a short drive away). He was described by one friend as a "bulldog" of a military guy, and may have been trying to handle something by himself for reasons of character or to protect others. He apparently contacted no one during this period--not family, not friends, not his West Point buddies, not his employers, not the police--no one. And, whatever it was that he was dealing with, it defeated him, and, at the end of this 2-day nightmare, he was murdered and his body dumped into a garbage truck in Newark (discovered when it got to the landfill in Wilmington).
My suspicion is that his murder was related to his work. Two recent things come to mind (but there are possibilities in his past work): 1) The recent failure of the AF to disclose its cyber war ops to the Senate, and, 2) the Duke Energy/Pioneer Energy $13.2 billion deal signed that week (first week of the year). (Duke has a new aviation facility at Charlotte International.) A few days after Wheeler was murdered, Ashley Turnot, wife of Obama's liaison to the House and lobbyist for Pioneer was burned to death in her standing BMW in her own garage (the very day the deal was signed). I don't believe that Turnot's death has been designated murder by the police. (Wheeler's has--from the beginning--and cause of death was recently announced--he was bludgeoned to death. No tox report has been released on Wheeler. It's been a month.) (Note: no health problems, age 66, no alcoholism or evidence of drinking.) The reason you may not have heard of any of this is that the AZ shootings occurred in the same week.
Wheeler seems to have been determined to stay in Wilmington to do something, rather than just go home and sleep off whatever was happening to him. (And his home in New Castle near Wilmington may have been a danger zone.) After refusing offers of help and having many opportunities to go home, he spent the night somewhere in Wilmington (no one knows where) and is seen on vid the next day wearing a hoodie sweatshirt that he hadn't worn the day before, hanging around a building containing the law offices of Connally Bove Lodge & Hutz (patent attorneys). That evening he goes up to the 10th Floor, their offices, and asks the receptionist if he can speak to "the managing partner." Before she can find anyone to talk to him, he vanishes. Last seen on vid, a short time later, outside that building, walking east. Next morning found dead in the landfill.
The FBI seems to be hands off on the case (although we can't know what's going on behind the scenes). The Newark police are in charge of it. One of the top security clearances in the country. West Point grad; degrees from Harvard and Yale. Advisor to two presidents (including Jr, circa '05). Very well-connected; involved in many top security issues (including the Minot air base nuclear incident). Working for MITRE, which works for DARPA.
Finally, I'm going to mention my "thin reed" connection of all this to AZ. Bear in mind that it's a thin reed. Rep Gabrielle Giffords was on all the relevant House military/high tech committees for cyber security/cyber warfare, and had just introduced a bill to ban the sale of military aircraft on the open market.
I think there's something here--at the very least, a "states secrets"/corporate secrets motive for Wheeler's murder. And how far do you have to bend away from "conspiracy" to ignore the coincidence of all this happening in the same week--Wheeler, Turnot and Giffords (and collateral damage)?
It's worth thinking about and being aware of (and, for investigators, investigating). I DON'T KNOW if there is any connection between these three violent incidents in the first week of 2011, or between any two of them. I just pay close attention to the news and also to how it's "framed" (what's upfront, what's been back-paged, what is disclosed about some event, or what is distorted or omitted, etc.) and I do a lot of internet research, and I've been doing this for a long time. I tend to notice and remember things that get swallowed up in the corporate 'news' "river of forgetfulness." I smell foul play, beyond what is evident--especially in the Wheeler/Turnot deaths. AZ is a stretch. But one thing I would urge people to remember is that TRILLIONS of dollars are at issue in government defense contracts--our tax dollars and other profiteering (use of our tax dollars TO profiteer). That is a lot of motive NOT to treat human life as sacred--even the lives of insiders or semi-insiders--and to eliminate people who may be in the way of massive amounts of money or threaten to disclose wrong-doing in the pursuit of massive amounts of money. Also, people with access to massive amounts of money, and the power that that brings, have the capability to monitor others, kill them if they get in the way and make it look like something else.
There is evidence that Wheeler's murderer or murderers were trying to make it look like something else. Turnot's death is also suspicious. The AZ attempted murder of Giffords and other murders and woundings were unquestionably committed by a young madman, and only if he was being manipulated (also with interrogation/control drugs?) could anyone else have been responsible--a remote possibility, with no evidence for it at all, except the curious coincidence in the timing of it and in Giffords' legislative interests.
