President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) commended ten foreign companies yesterday for their commitment to Taiwan as a source of supply and the distinguished contributions they have made to Taiwan, as the three-day Taiwan Business Alliance Conference concluded last night.
In his speech to the conference's more than 2000 guests, Chen also reiterated that the government would continue to strengthen Taiwan's position as a regional technical and operations center for the Asia-Pacific market, a day after he repeated his goal to establish a direct air link with the People's Republic of China by the end of next year.
The 10 companies were lauded by Chen for their significant procurement activities in the country, as they account for a significant portion of all foreign company purchases in Taiwan. HP and Compaq lead the way with NT$65 billion in local purchases, followed by Dell Inc. and IBM, which bought NT$20 billion and NT$15 billion worth of goods in Taiwan respectively.
