HERO soldier Chris Finney told yesterday of the terrifying friendly fire incident in Iraq that earned him one of the highest bravery awards.

Chris, 19, rescued a comrade from their blazing Scimitar armoured vehicle when it was hit by American A10 "tankbuster" planes.

He dashed back to help the gunner, who was trapped and injured in the turret, dragging him clear despite smoke, flames and exploding ammunition.

He said: "We got hit on the top. I did not know what had happened. I heard a big bang and the gunner was screaming.

"I reversed but hit the vehicle behind because it had not moved."

"I got out and looked around to see what I could do.

"Our gunner was half out of the vehicle hatch and his leg had been all smashed up. I started to give him first aid and he fell into unconsciousness.
