Iraq: One year later ...Shiite militias armed with Kalashnikovs, Koran
Basra, Iraq — Young men with Kalashnikovs guard the entrance of the walled compound. Young men with pistols tucked into their trousers are lounging inside. Petitioners crowd into the compound to appeal for help.
In the middle of it all is Sheik Abdul al-Bahadili, a plump-faced 38-year-old Shia mullah who issues decrees, judges disputes and sifts through the stacks of job applications from hundreds of men who want to join his militia.
Half a dozen thick folders filled with applications are piled on his desk. Asked how many volunteers are in his militia, he smiles cryptically and replies: "As many as the number of letters in the Holy Koran."
Even though the U.S.-led coalition has banned his Shia force from carrying weapons, the mullah boasts that his men have wielded guns in paramilitary operations against kidnappers and drug dealers.
