Police and gun control
I was wondering if anyone has come up with any statistics that show that rank and file police officiers support gun control. I have seen many statistics to the contrary and was curious if anyone has any information on this subject. Thanks

1. I don't know
But rest assured there are experts on the subject here and some are on the payroll of the NRA and like-minded orgs.

2. I agree with you. The NRA for too long has supported gun control laws.
"But rest assured there are experts on the subject here and some are on the payroll of the NRA and like-minded orgs."

Those that are on the payroll of the NRA know that the NRA has a long history of supporting gun control laws (as that was the OP's question), and as such any statistics they come up with saying that the rank and file support gun control is automatically suspect. To my knowledge (despite what the NRA will tell you) the rank and file do NOT support gun control.

4. Here's a peek behind the blue curtain
Here is an interesting thread (actually a poll) on a cop forum addressing concealed weapons permits for the gen-pop. Some posters expound on gun control, the "official" positions of their politically appointed management and gun rights in general.

5. It has probably been a few years since any new polls
have been run. However, the past polls ran with the trends that
(1) the politically appointed chiefs mimicked their appointers (usually anti-gun),
(2) the cops on the street were pro-gun.

6. Not sure how to say it but
LEO's are people just like you and me. The same 'gun control' laws that affect us in the home affects them the same way. They're not stupid and don't have a "special hall pass" to personally possess WMD's as some in Gen. Disc. would have you believe. LEO's, especially the man on the street, know this and react the same way you and I do to the idiocy proposed by Feinenstein and the rest.

example: Heller vs DC

7. I've known a lot of police officers in Florida
and I've never met one who was opposed to gun ownership by honest and responsible citizens.

They also had no problems with a civilian carrying a concealed weapon as long as he had a permit.

Of course, this is Florida, a state with fairly liberal gun laws. Police here don't feel threatened by honest gun owners unless they're acting irresponsible or drunk. They don't tolerate bad behavior when it involves firearms.

I have asked several what they would do if draconian gun laws were passed requiring confiscation of weapons. They indicated they would refuse to enforce such laws. They also mentioned that they would refuse to give up their own private weapons.

Now in cities or states where guns are less common and the laws more restrictive, the police may have different opinions.

8. ask a local cop
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 11:41 AM by Indy Lurker
or go to the forum at officer.com and ask.

Most cop I know believe there and good people and bad people in the world, and there is no harm in letting good people have firearms.

ON EDIT:

I think most cops see guns as simply being a tool, for them, an everyday tool, like their radio, cuffs, and baton.

As such, they don't see them as being "special"

9. No stats at hand, but the officer who took my prints when I was applying for my CHL...
said that in his opinion, the state ought not to charge for CHL's, but issue them for free to qualified applicants.
